It was the day the moon fell into the sea. You would, too, if you had been stuck to the sky for four and a half billion years. Imagine that! The moon had been up there all that time, not bothering anyone, and usually keeping her good nature. Most round things can’t help but be good natured because it’s much easier for them to smile. But recently she had grown, quite frankly, a little bit cross at all the astronauts poking and prodding and jumping about on her face. So – slowly, and from simple exhaustion – she had begun to droop in the middle, like a piece of thick jam toast stuck to the ceiling.
Her belly crept lower and lower, and people started to notice the night sky was much brighter. “Did someone change the light bulb out here?” the not-so-clever people said. And nobody noticed that it was the moon that made it brighter, because everyone had forgotten the moon was there. This filled her up with sadness – which made her droop even more, as sadness is a notoriously heavy substance.
After sinking lower and lower, there was finally a great KRRUP! like a giant Velcro shoe, and the moon came falling down. Another not-so-clever person saw the falling shape and asked, “Is that thick jam toast falling from the sky?” But it wasn’t. It was the moon, flumping into the sea with a great big smack. “Who turned the lights out?” No-one had turned the lights out. The moon had disappeared beneath the waves of the sea, and only one boy on a hillside had been paying any attention.
