The event I’m most looking forward to at the festival is Gods and Warriors with Michelle Paver. Paver’s already proven she can write an epic story with her fantastic series Chronicles of Ancient Darkness, which spans six books and is set in the Stone Age. Gods and Warriors is the first book in a new series of the same name. The action has moved location to the Mediterranean as well as forward in time to the early Bronze Age, long before the Greek Myths or the Trojan War, and looks set to continue Paver’s winning formula of young adults battling for survival, and discovering allies among the animals they encounter.
I’ve read the first couple of chapters and am absolutely hooked! The story starts right in the midst of the action, and doesn’t let up the pace. Hylas is a tough, determined protagonist who I was instantly rooting for, and the other characters that have been introduced so far are all intriguing in their own ways.
Michelle always throws herself into the research of her books, and for this one she’s not only visited various mountains and ruins in Greece and Crete (the setting of the books), she also swam with dolphins! I think all of this combined is going to make for a really interesting event at the Bath Kids LitFest (Click here for more details!), with a peek at what lies ahead in the series, as well as some insights into an author’s writing processes.
